Heal versus Cure: A Simple Introduction

Healing occurs inside. A cure is on the outside. Cures encourage and assist with healing on the inside. Cures can be chemical in nature such as food, beverages, supplements, over the counter medication and prescription medicines. Cures can also be structural in nature such as surgery, physical therapy, chiropractic, myofascial release, neuromuscular massage and physical training. Cures can also be knowledge. This is when the provider realizes best next steps in treatment, shares the recommendations with the patient or client and/or when it is the right thing to do, completes the steps. Yet, it is what unfolds inside the patient or client when the cure is provided and received where healing occurs.

Example: Is the intent of the cure to reduce pain {Cure only} or is the intent of the cure to create greater health in the tissue, organ or bone which results in a sustainable reduction of pain and greater functioning of the tissue, organ or bone {Cure and Heal}?

                                                  Simple Physical Healing Example

                                                    An Advanced and Proven Approach

In 2013, I had major surgery. It was the second revision of a hip prosthesis. This was the fourth major surgery with this hip region. It began with a septic infection at age 5 which was further complicated by pneumonia. I also experienced three prosthesis dislocations within four months of one another four months after the 2013 surgery. By the end of 2013, I was wearing a hip brace 24 hours a day which immobilized the hip. Let’s just say I looked a bit like Robocop. I focused on creating and experiencing sustainable healing or optimal health and well being of the hip region despite the odds and/or what the orthopedic surgeons understood.

In other words, greater mobility of the area one next right step at a time meant less restriction and pain in the area as well as greater balance throughout the body. After all, it is the hip in which the spine rests on. In addition, one hemisphere would work harder than the other until greater and greater balance has been created between the left and right hemisphere of the body.  Also keep in mind, I was heading into the ‘unknown’ psychologically, for there was post traumatic stress due to accidents, dislocations and more prior to and after the surgeries.

                                                           Overview of Cures

I. Mental Health Foundation: Increasing Levels of Awareness of Three Psychological Principles Inside, therefore, increasing ability to understand state of mind in the Now as well as allow conscious states of mind in the Now throughout healing process

Intent 1: Healthier, more intentional state of mind in the Now which is greater psychological listening when completing structure therapies, therefore, more conscious, safer movements versus incurring injuries or fear of completing movement. When the physical body communicated in or outside of  structural therapy such as pain, numbness, tingling, more accurate understanding that it was communicating and what it was communicating. This resulted in higher leveled communication to providers as well as increased quality of care independently.

Intent 2: Higher quality, more accurate, more cohesive decision making, independent of provider or health insurance, therefore, more of a partner with provider rather than dependent on provider in creating and experiencing greater healing inside whether the provider was orthopedic surgeon, emergency room doctor, physical therapist or chiropractor who all worked independent of one another. As patient or client, I was more in the driver’s seat of my physical and mental health.

Intent 3: State of mind while going through the cure process. For example, anxious during treatment or fully psychologically listening inside, opposing states of mind. The latter expedites progress, healing, collaboration, learning, and enjoyment during treatment. The former bogs down treatment through a tension in the body, through increased heart rate and more shallow, intermittent breathing or oxygen flow in the body as well as lower quality communication, collaboration and learning during treatment. Awareness increased during treatment, greater understanding, thus care of the body after and between treatments. Also, more anxious during treatment, less willing to complete vital next right step in treatment to for healing to progress. Healthier, more conscious state of mind more willing to complete next right step in treatment to experience greater progress healing.

II. Structural: Skills and Progress Continuum for each treatment

Phase 1: For strength and increase mobility: physical therapy several times a week. Completed exercises at home on nonphysical therapy days.  Chiropractic to reduce pain and increase mobility of the spine. Neuromuscular massage therapy to reeducate the soft tissue. Again, the intent was to reduce pain, to reduce restriction, to reduce imbalance and increase mobility.

Phase 2: Continue with the above. Physical therapy program one day a week with physical therapist. Completed program at home other days. This treatment is more area specific to create greater strength, thus balance within discrete areas of the body. Began myofascial release treatment for less pain and greater ease of movement. Introduced Essentrics which is more generalized treatment which is replacing physical therapy. It stretches and strengthens the soft tissue to create more balance within the regions of the body.

Phase 3: Discontinue physical therapy. Reduce chiropractic. Reduce neuromuscular massage. Increase Myofascial release treatment. Increase Essentrics classes per week.

III. Chemical: Nutrient dense food, drink and supplements to accelerate and support physical healing, keep inflammation low, and keep mood stable and buoyant. Maintain a healthy weight for ease of movement, greater mobility and less structural pain.

A. Increase physical healing:
Food: dark leafy greens, broccoli sprouts, cruciferous vegetables, lean protein such as nuts, seeds, beans, legumes, fish, quinoa, plant based high protein yogurt, plant based high protein pasta, healthy fats such as coconut oil, coconut butter, olive oil, avocado oil, walnut oil, plant based milks, keep added sugars and sodium low, berries, lemons, avocados, beets and
drink plenty of water

Supplements: Hyaluronic Acid liquid or capsule or Tremella Mushroom, Vitamin C {Example: Camu Camu or Emergen-C}, Calcium and Magnesium {Example: New Chapter Bone Strength}, Vitamin D, Right combination for body to create Collagen {Example: Sunwarrior Beauty Greens Collagen Booster}, Some version of Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM {Examples: Vibrant Health Joint Vibrance or Emerald Labs Joint Health }

B. Reduce pain and inflammation:
Food: Tart Cherries or juice, eliminate or reduce white and tans colored foods such as breads, white rice, typical pasta, reduce prepared foods with added sugars, high sodium, artificial ingredients and preservatives, reduce or eliminate alcohol such as beer and hard liquor

Supplements: Arnica gel or cream and tablets, Omegas 3-6-9 {Example: Barlean’s Total Omega}, Bromelain, Turmeric, Boswella {Example: Vibrant Health Joint Vibrance}
